A Message From The Director

Meet Dr. Freelove

Dr FreeloveHello and thank you for visiting the Smoky Hill Family Medicine Residency website. For over 30 years, we have proudly produced some of the finest family physicians to serve rural Kansas communities in dire need.

Being a community-based and family-oriented program and working closely with other community health providers has allowed our residents to learn and excel in all applicable procedures and circumstances that they may encounter. We believe that the educational, philosophical and practical needs of family medicine residents who desire to practice rural medicine are best met in a non-tertiary care setting. The Salina community offers a broad patient case mix necessary to train competent, confident and caring family physicians who will work on the front lines of the health care system.

The mission of Smoky Hill is and always will be to prepare family physicians for rural practice. This mission permeates everything we do, and as such our curriculum is specifically designed to give residents the tools necessary for rural practice yet still has the flexibility to allow for personalization.

Graduates of our program provide the full spectrum of family medicine, including obstetrics with C-sections, upper and lower endoscopy and other procedures, emergency medicine and inpatient medicine in addition to outpatient clinic.

Our faculty has broad and complementary interests and skill, and has been picked not only for their abilities as family physicians and teachers, but also for their personalities and attributes as mentors and role models. Each of the faculty is dedicated to ensuring that our residents receive unparalleled training. An incredible cadre of volunteer specialty faculty share this desire and dedication.

Without a doubt, our biggest strength is the quality of our residents. With eight winners of the AAFP/Bristol Myers Squibb Award, our residents are recognized on a national scale for their accomplishments. As a relatively small group, the residents are a family of smart, hard working, extremely capable family physicians who just happen to also be great people to be around and work with.

I invite you to take the time to look at us closely and consider joining our family. I am confident that you will like what you see.

Sincerely,

Robert Freelove, MD
